After some plan-changing, we fixed our next talk „Swimming upstream in the container revolution: Containerless Continuous Delivery“ by Bert Jan Schrijver. Bert Jan is a Software craftsman at JPoint in the Netherlands and Java User Group leader for NLJUG, the Dutch Java User Group. His focus is on Java, Continuous Delivery and DevOps. He loves to share his knowledge by speaking at conferences and writing for the Dutch Java magazine.

When and Where

The event will be held on Thursday, the 7th of January 2016, at 18:30 (doors open 18:00), again at the bitstars GmbH headquarter, Hanbrucher Straße 40, 52064 Aachen. Admission is free, but you are asked to register via Google forms so that we know how many guests to expect. We will have a raffle of Java-related books from O’Reilly between the preregistered guests before the talk starts. After talk we wrap up with some free drinks together with the speaker, giving you the opportunity to ask him some more questions in private.

Abstract of the talk

You’re probably familiar with the buzz around Docker and other popular container solutions. Advocates for these tools make it seem like using containers is the only way to go nowadays. So should we throw away everything we learned about Continuous Delivery in the past 10 years for a hype that’s been around for just a few years? Of course not. This session shares experiences with a practical approach to Continuous Delivery and DevOps in 10 clear, down-to-earth steps. The result is a setup that is scalable, resilient and maintainable, yet without the use of popular container solutions like Docker or Mesos. Key concepts are automated provisioning and deployments, DevOps, continuous testing, microservices, open source, cloud services and automated scaling.
